With the 2023 here, many of us are thinking about our fitness goals whether we are new or old to the game. - I've been at it for a long 10 years and I'd like to share 5 mistakes I think I've made during my journey. - Preface: these are just things I personally wish I did differently, use it as food for thought for yourself. Everyone's journey is different. - #5: Refusing to gain weight. As you can see, I started with a lean base where I was doing calisthenics consistently. As a young kid, I was obsessed with abs and being lean. I'd cut a lot of calories to try and maintain a certain level of leanness and I did this for years. I've let go this obsession and gained the majority of my size in recent years. I wish I let go of this idea when I was younger at the peak of puberty; where the body WANTS to grow. It takes YEARS to build quality muscle but only weeks-months to lose fat. - #4: Marrying ideas. I was close minded for years and was married to the identity of being lean and strong only doing big three; squat, bench and deadlift... heavily neglecting other body parts and lifts. I refused to train any other way simply because I mimicked what stronger and smarter people did and said. Do not fall into strong dogmatic beliefs. - #3: Not failing. For years I would not challenge myself. I would avoid maxing out because I deemed it to be smart to "save it for competition", all the while it was truly because I was scared of failing. The act of failing is not synonymous with being a failure. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself. - #2: Ego. Almost all mistakes I've made can be due to my ego. I refuse to gain weight, I marry ideas, I avoided failing, all because of my ego. Put your ego to the side and you'll truly find what you want in your goals and for yourself. - #1: Not being kind of enough to myself. I'm guilty of going getting into a negative feedback loop. When things aren't feeling good, I let it get to me and I start to think of everything else that's not going well and it puts me into a mental ditch. Have short term memory, when something goes wrong or doesn't feel right, just forget it and move on.
